Introduction to Problem-Based Learning

UMBC is part of the international CIRTL network. As part of UMBC, you have the opportunity to participate in CIRTL activities at other schools. The University of Delaware has invited UMBC to participate in this event on Problem-Based Learning without cost.

The University of Delaware’s (UD) Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education, Emory University, and the Center for Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) are holding a joint workshop series at UD this May 2018.  

The workshops will introduce participants to inquiry-based instructional approaches centered on problem-based learning (PBL). This three-day, in-person teaching institute at UD is open to all graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty. Registration and additional information is here.

Introduction to Problem-Based Learning (University of Delaware)

When: 8AM Tuesday, May 22 through 12PM Thursday, May 24

Location: University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware

What: This face-to-face institute is for current and future educators interested in learning more about problem-based learning (PBL). Participants will be introduced to inquiry-based approaches centered on problem-based learning. We will demonstrate strategies, practice skills, and identify resources to transform classrooms from lecture-based, teacher-centered spaces into student-centered, inquiry-based environments. Participants in our institute will identify the best practices and challenges of implementing PBL and discover sources of PBL curriculum materials to use in their current and future courses. Although primarily focused on problem-based learning, we will incorporate other pedagogies into a flexible toolkit with which participants can design and lead student-centered investigations. The specific activities and outcomes of this institute directly align with many important CIRTL goals, particularly those that focus on the power of learning in the context of a learning community, and on aligning learning goals and assessments with evidence-based practices. Participants will leave the institute having written a new teachable PBL unit based on a particular set of concepts of interest, or creatively adapted an existing case or problem, with accompanying implementation plan.

Costs: Participants will be responsible for their own travel and lodging. Need-based housing scholarships will be available on a limited basis for graduate student attendees– consult the housing information on the institute registration site for more information. Breakfast and an first-evening reception buffet will be provided for all participants, as well as free lunches for all graduate student and postdoc participants. There is no registration fee.
