Description
Mirror the Mentor
This session will discuss mentoring tools for faculty as a means to inform graduate students and postdocs about the mentoring process, and how to move through the process as a mentee. The session will include a look at the process of writing a letter of recommendation, and reversing that process. This session is especially relevant for postdocs who should know how to deconstruct the letter writing process to be sure that they will have the kind of recommendation that will needed to move into an independent career.
This session is based on a past UMBC "Postdoctoral Morning Coffee" for to assist postdocs with understanding their relationships with their mentors, and a national conference session for the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB's) Institute for Teaching and Mentoring/Compact for Faculty Diversity. Dr. Christine Grant from NC State, and Dr. Renetta Tull from UMBC developed tools for faculty mentors. Their session for faculty, chairs, and deans, led to Dr. Tull's development of The Mentor Mirror. (Dr. Grant has additional tools here: Success Strategies From Women in STEM: A Portable Mentor.)
Speaker: Dr. Renetta Tull, Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Student Development and Postdoctoral Affairs
Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Location: Commons 331
Background:
The IDP: See the PROMISE resource:
The Scripps Research Institute has an individual development plan (IDP), questionnaire and checklist, for graduate students to review and to discuss regularly with their graduate advisors.
The Mentor Mirror: Dr. Grant and Dr. Tull examined the IDP survey for students and postdocs and flipped the questions around, in a sense, providing a mirror for the mentor to see if he or she is providing the mentoring experience that their students need.
Attend this awesome workshop and join the conversation!
