- NIH Individual Postdoctoral Fellowships: These fellowships provide funding for postdoctoral researchers in biomedical research, behavioral research, and social science research. The fellowship provides a stipend, travel support, and health benefits for up to three years.
- NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology: This fellowship provides funding for postdoctoral researchers in the biological sciences. The fellowship provides a stipend, travel support, and health benefits for up to two years.
- American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships: These fellowships provide funding for women who are postdoctoral researchers or scholars in any field. The fellowship provides a stipend, travel support, and health benefits for up to one year.
- Simons Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in Marine Microbial Ecology: This fellowship provides funding for postdoctoral researchers who are interested in studying marine microbial ecology. The fellowship provides a stipend, travel support, and health benefits for up to three years.
- Burroughs Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral Enrichment Program: This program provides funding for postdoctoral researchers in the biomedical sciences. The program provides a stipend, travel support, and health benefits for up to three years.
In addition to these opportunities, there are many other funding sources available for postdoctoral researchers. We encourage you to explore funding options in your specific field of research and to speak with your mentor or supervisor for guidance and support in securing funding.
Additional Resources for Funding:
Many postdoctoral appointments are funded by individual members of the faculty based on allocations from their research grants, or by academic departments based upon strategic initiatives. Potential postdoctoral associates are encouraged to contact faculty of interest to inquire about opportunities within their research groups. This page will provide a running list of postdoctoral funding opportunities.
- FELLOWSHIP/APPOINTMENT at UMBC: Natural Sciences Pre-Professoriate Fellowship. The purpose of the fellowship is to support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in academia and prepare them for a possible tenure-track appointment at UMBC. The Department welcomes applications from candidates with research and teaching interests in all areas of Chemistry or Biochemistry, and with diverse experiences, including candidates from industry, academia, or government laboratories. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the STEM professoriate.
- FELLOWSHIP/APPOINTMENT at UMBC: UMBC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship for Faculty Diversity is a 2-year in-residence fellowship that supports promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to prepare those scholars for possible tenure-track appointments at UMBC.
National Fellowships
- NIH MOSAIC program: The MOSAIC K99/R00 program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of promising postdoctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds (e.g., see NIH’s Interest in Diversity) from their mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent research-intensive faculty positions. The MOSAIC K99/R00 program will provide independent NIH research support before and after this transition to help awardees launch successful, independent research careers.
- FELLOWSHIP: National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NHGRI Intramural Health Disparities Postdoctoral Fellowship is intended for recent doctoral and medical graduates interested in utilizing genetics/genomics approaches in the growing area of health disparities research. As part of this program, fellows may engage in basic, clinical or social behavioral research in an interdisciplinary research environment with access to the unparalleled resources of the NIH. Fellows will also receive personalized mentoring and take advantage of professional development resources through the NHGRI Intramural Training Office and The NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education. Call for Proposals for Virtual Visiting Scholars
Each year, the ARC Network selects two Virtual Visiting Scholars to conduct research on existing or emerging themes from scholarly literature on gender equity in STEM workplaces. Virtual Visiting Scholars employ qualitative and/or quantitative meta-analytic and meta-synthesis techniques to identify best practices, structural barriers or other larger themes from existing literature. Research also incorporates considerations of diversity and inclusion from an intersectional and systemic perspective.
Applications are usually due in summer and two (2) awards are made annually. Link for more information: https://www.equityinstem.org/virtual-visiting-scholars
Remember that applying for funding can be a competitive process, so it’s important to carefully read and follow the guidelines and instructions provided by the funding organization. Good luck in your funding search!
